What do baptists believe in?

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

The Trinitarian tradition has been the shared by the baptist church and the other Christian denominations. However, there are a few beliefs of baptist that differ from other congregations. Here are a few basic beliefs of their church.

Their first belief is that the Holy Bible was written by men who are divinely inspired. This is a revelation of God to man and is a perfect treasure of divine instruction.  For them, it has God for its author, salvation for its end and truth for its matter. This means that the Scripture is totally true and trustworthy and reveals all the principles by which God judges us. Thus, it will remain the true center for Christian union until the end of the world. It is a supreme standard where all the human conduct, creeds and religious opinions must be tried.   Everything in the Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is the focus of divine revelation.

For baptists, like the independent fundamental baptists, there is only one living and true God. He only reveals Himself as Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, each with distinct personal attributes, but without division of nature, essence, or being. God the father is the one who reigns in over the universe, his creatures and the flow of the stream of human history according to the purposes of his grace.  Christ, the eternal Son of God has honored the divine law with His personal obedience and His substitutionary death on the cross which made the provision for the redemption of the sin of men. The Holy Spirit, is the fully divine Spirit of God who enlightens and empowers the believer and the church in worship, evangelism, and service.

The Christian baptism of the baptist church Lexington is through the immersion of a believer in water. This is an act of a person’s obedience which symbolizes the believer’s faith in a crucified, buried, and risen Savior. It is also through the believer’s death to sin, the burial of the old life, and the resurrection to walk in newness of life in Christ Jesus.

The baptists also believed that God is the source of all blessings, may it be temporal or spiritual.  It suggests that all we have are owned by Him and that the Christians have a spiritual debt to the whole word. They have a holy trusteeship in the gospel and a binding stewardship in their possession. Christians are therefore under the obligation to serve God with their time, talents, and material possessions.
